One of the most incredible things about Scranton is the breadth of our stories - and how much we love telling them! “Scranton Stories” is not the first forum, nor will it be the last, dedicated to exploring and celebrating stories of our city - past and present.
Here is a brief list of other important projects that have or are currently telling wonderful stories of Scranton, The Electric City. This list is (and always will be) a work in progress - as we continue to explore our city and its residents. Do you know of a project not listed here? Hexagons are created throughout the school year and exhibited at a gallery space in Scranton, Pennsylvania, during the month of September. These exhibits make a powerful visual image of interdependent thought and action. The Project awards recognition, through a jurying process, to outstanding examples of creative interpretation of the yearly theme or the theme of interdependence. In the last fourteen years, we have exhibited over 12,000 hexagons from more than 100 schools across North America, Africa, Australia, Europe, and Asia.

The Place I Call Home: How Abolition and the Underground Railroad Shaped the Communities of Northeastern Pennsylvania (Book and Traveling Exhibit)
Project of: The Center for Anti-Slavery Studies
A ten-year project based within Montrose exploring the untold stories about Northeastern Pennsylvania’s Abolition and Underground Railroad history and how those stories can elevate how the Underground Railroad is understood and taught. A book and traveling exhibit detail this history across ten counties of Northeastern Pennsylvania. The strength of our region’s story caused it to be listed by the National Endowment of Humanities as “One of America’s Most Historic Places”. Learn about Scranton’s involvement - and update your thoughts about this vital time in American History.

Project of: The Welsh Cultural Endeavor of Northeastern Pennsylvania
A community interest group – dedicated to preservation of Welsh culture through proliferation of new presentation ideas and making awareness of customs and traditions while focusing on future generations and their awareness of who we are. We seek preservation through propagation efforts, and ultimately, we are all about those not yet part of us.

The Second Sundays Folk Art Series
Project of: Everhart Museum Folk & Traditional Arts Initiative
The Second Sunday Folk and Traditional Arts Series was made possible through collaborative partnership between the Everhart Museum and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts through their Folk and Traditional Arts Partnership Program, to sustain cultural and artistic practices rooted in the histories, traditions, and everyday lives of people in Lackawanna, Luzerne, Pike, Susquehanna, Wayne, and Wyoming counties. The series aims to identify traditional artists within the NEPA region, assist those artists in keeping their traditions, and create community access to folk arts through presentations, performances, workshops, and other programs.

Project of: Madeline Zoë McNichols & Scranton Fringe Festival
The Scranton StorySlam is an engaging storytelling competition at which ten storytellers each share a live, true, five-minute, personal story inspired by the evening’s theme. Stories are told without any notes, allowing the storytellers to connect with the audience in a spontaneous and authentic way as they speak from memory.
The Scranton StorySlam features some of the Electric City’s most colorful characters in a head-to-head storytelling competition with unique themes.

Project of: The Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum
This project presents an opportunity for the museum to share the stories of people who were not miners or directly engaged in anthracite production. These are the stories of people who were here to support and provide services to the broader community, their descendant populations, and people who came here as the industry declined and as new, smaller businesses developed to take advantage of local opportunities and economic infrastructure. We are all here now because of the anthracite, but there have been people from many more places and people who share different values and experiences than traditionally represented in the Anthracite Heritage Museum. We want to expand the museum’s interpretation of our region to include more diverse stories. We want to know the story of your family or and your community. We want to understand how you came to settle here and how the industrial culture impacted or influenced you and your community.
