Psychology
Class of 2019

Why did you choose Scranton?

I chose Scranton because of its community atmosphere. When I toured the school, I felt this overwhelming sense of home. Learning about the stellar Psychology Department, the vibrant student life, and the opportunities for development cemented my decision to attend Scranton.

What did you like about the psychology major?

There were many aspects I liked about the major. First, the professors took an interest in each student and fostered growth. Second, the opportunities for student development in the Department are exceptional. I was a research and teaching assistant to multiple faculty members. Third, the class sizes were great. Coming from a small high school, I enjoyed the small class sizes where I could engage with the faculty, my peers, and the material. Finally, the sense of comradery throughout the department was appealing. The other students, faculty, and staff genuinely wanted me to succeed!

How did the psychology program prepare you for the real world?

The psychology program provided me with the academic foundation and applied skills to succeed. After graduation, I accepted a job in a psychiatric hospital. The courses and the internships in the department prepared me to work with clients. Through research and teaching assistantships, I was prepared for graduate school. I had faculty support me throughout the journey, and I could not be more grateful.

What are you up to now?

After a year of working at a psychiatric hospital, I am attending a Counseling Psychology Ph.D. program at the University of Kansas. I am researching positive psychology, innovative therapy methods, and adolescent development. I wouldn't be where I am without Scranton’s Psychology Department!

Anything else you would like to add?

Get involved! The Psychology Department has multiple opportunities for you to succeed. The faculty will guide you but your learning is ultimately determined by you. Good luck to everyone entering Psychology at Scranton. You’ve made the best decision!
